“No matter how extraordinary our life is, how rich with suprises and relevations, what we will leave behind is nothing but a few faded images. And, unless somebody decides to rescue them from the past, they will remain silent and forgotten. “
Massimiliano Gioni, The Invention of Solitude
Starting his book A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man with the sentence Once Upon a Time and a very good time, James Joyce tries to describe the past as greater attractiveness, but also to influence the present. In my drawing series based on his book, I create an artistic language and approach the borrowed illusion from the past with reflection on the present.
My idea behind the drawings series titled Once Upon a Time in a very good time is to connect sentences from the book with secondary and sometimes with abstract informal images, and to assemble them in a drawings story. The relation of text and image describes the visual narrative of the work. Collecting photography from postcards, posters, magazines and book dating from the 1950`s to 1980`s.
When I was a teenager I wanted to become a poet. I was reading poems, but I haven`t try to write really a poem. So since I don`t have this talent I turned to the visual art in order to express myself and work with paintings and drawings. In one of my previous projects I used a text from Samuel Becket’s „Waiting of Godot“, I was always inspired of the narrative in the text which reacts to visual contemporary time. In the theater, texts are used in a performative way by the actors, but in my case, I materialize it through images and drawings with a long-term character. The drawings are using the narrative from Joyce`s texts randomly, with complementing images, through which I make my drawing interpretation build a fictional story.
I would like to encounter and research the real places described in the book, and related to the context. Part of the already existing drawings are real photographies from my childhood and families, others belong to my friends and neighbors. With this interference, the storyline becomes closer to my personal life.
Although the choice of quotations happens very intuitive I try to follow the story consecutively. Without precise chronological arrangement, they retain their logic. The relation between the images and the text passages is the one between question and answer or the other way about.
In the last 10 years, language became an important tool for my works. I use it in drawings and paintings, in order to assemble high rocky in one work which was also the concept for this project. Usually, everyone sharing different visions and associations by consuming the same content. Therefore the drawings tending to enhance my own personal view and interpretation.
The materials I use mostly are hand-made paper, color- and Nero pencil, ink and aquarelle.
