Biography

Nestor Kovachev (b. 1981, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria) is a Vienna-based visual artist working across drawing, painting, and installation. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, graduating in 2005, and previously at the University of Veliko Tarnovo.

Kovachev’s artistic practice explores the intersections of memory, history, and visual narration. Central to his work is the reinterpretation of cinematic, cultural, and historical archetypes, which he transforms into serial visual sequences. By fragmenting, isolating, and reconfiguring familiar narratives, he opens new spaces of meaning between image, recollection, and abstraction.

A defining principle of his practice is the use of series. In extensive cycles of drawings—such as Bronenosets Potemkin, developed in dialogue with Sergei Eisenstein’s film, or works referencing Bulgarian cinema—Kovachev examines how images shape collective memory and how storytelling can be disrupted and reconstructed through visual means. His works often balance reduction and precision with conceptual depth, inviting close and contemplative viewing.

His work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and Asia, including Vienna, New York, Berlin, Paris, Seoul, Sofia, Reykjavik, and Moscow. He has participated in international residency programs, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Seoul and CCA Andratx, Mallorca.

Kovachev’s works are held in public and private collections, including the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, National Galley Bulgaria, Museum Angerlehner, The Sofia City Art Gallery, The Esterházy Foundation,Uni Credit Group Collection, Milano, Italy and the Luciano Benetton Collection.

He lives and works in Vienna.
